Diploma in Fertility Nursing

Fertility nursing is a specialised arena of practice in which nurses/ will find themselves at the forefront of an emerging fertility care services. The objective of the course is to develop nurse specialists to improve overall quality of care.

The Academy of Reproductive Medicine and Surgery recognises the need of formal training program for nurses within fertility services. The objective of the course is to develop nurse specialists to improve overall quality of care. 

 

The DFN program is designed to develop skills and knowledge in specialist areas of practice such as:

  • Ovulation induction

  • Intra-uterine insemination

  • IVF and ICSI related services

  • fertility preservation

  • transgender care

  • same sex couples

  • single people

  • Eggs Sperms and Embryo donation

  • surrogacy.

Key Intended learning outcomes

​

By the end of this program, the candidate will be able to

​

  1. Take medical history, discuss relevant investigations

  2. Consent patients for fertility treatment following local and government rules 

  3. Counsel and discuss fertility treatments

  4. Offer compassionate care and support throughout treatment cycle

  5. Competent in handling nurse advice line and answer all possible common questions by patients

  6. Discuss different protocols with patients

  7. Plan the drug dosing as per protocol and Injection teaching 

  8. Understand the monitoring scans and change of protocols

  9. Understand the procedures like IUI, Embryo transfers and pregnancy scans.

  10. Describe and evaluate the relevant technique for the process of embryo transfer

  11. Specialize in donor gamete conception, surrogacy, and fertility preservation

  12. Plan treatment for single person, same sex couples and transgenders

Eligibility

Essential criteria

  1. Registered Nurse qualification

  2. Nursing experience for at least one year 

  3. On-going training opportunity with approved assisted conception facility in the home country

English language requirement

​

The program is taught and assessed in English language.

​

Applicants can demonstrate English language requirements by:

  1. · The graduate degree taught in English

  2. · Taking an approved proficiency test IELTS/ TOEFL/PTE academic

  3. · Providing an approved international English language qualification.

Teaching and Assessment

Teaching

​

Students will be taught through a mix of:

  • Lectures

  • Group discussions

  • Clinical skills at training centres

  • Competency based assessment portfolio

  • Virtual teaching from Fertility Centre at Birmingham Women’s Hospital

  • Journal clubs

  • Self-directed learning

​

The course consists of taught modules and a research project.

 

Lectures will be delivered by Distinguished International Faculties. The faculties are chosen carefully to enrich the learning experience of our students.

Modules

Each module will have its intended learning outcomes. The student must complete all core and at least one elective module.

Assessment

​

Written exams:

  • Five modular exams, one at the end of each module

  • Format: MCQs, and case studies

  • One final MCQ exam at the end of the program

 

Oral exam

One oral exam will be held at the end of the program. The candidate passes through four sessions each has a board of two teachers.

Pass/Fail criteria

In all written and oral exams, the pass /fail limits will be defined using a formal standard-setting process.

 

Logbook

The candidates will have a competency-based logbook which should be submitted by the end of program. The mark of logbook will be distributed on

  • Workplace-based assessments

  • Lectures attendance

  • Live/virtual procedure attendance

  • Workshops attendance

  • Research Project

Duration

Duration

The duration of the program is Minimum 6 months and maximum one year.

​

The DFN program is competency and skill-based program. It is built on the successful achievement of competency and knowledge evidenced by logbook, assignments, and course work. Due to different workload at different places, varied timetables or case opportunities, few applicants may take longer than others to complete the program.

The DFN program ensures that candidates have achieved adequate knowledge and skills to deliver safe effective and high-quality fertility care.
